To appear in CA Intermediate examination, a student must:
1. Be enrolled for the Intermediate Course
2. Produce a certificate showing completion of study course for a period of not less than 8 months as on the first day of the month in which the examination is held
The 6 subjects of Intermediate Course are classified into two groups of 3 papers each. Students can appear in one group or both groups simultaneously.
CA Intermediate passing criteria:
To pass both groups simultaneously at one sitting:
- Option A: Minimum 40% in each paper of each Group AND 50% aggregate in all papers of each Group separately
- Option B: Minimum 40% in each paper of both Groups AND 50% aggregate in all papers of both Groups taken together
To pass a single Group:
- Minimum 40% in each paper of that Group AND 50% aggregate in all papers of that Group
A student is declared to have passed Intermediate when they pass both Group I and Group II.
Exemption rule for CA Intermediate:
If a student appeared in all papers of a Group/Unit but failed, and secured minimum 60% marks in any paper(s) of that Group, those papers are exempt for the next 3 consecutive examinations.
During the exemption period:
- The student is still not eligible for further exemptions in remaining papers of that Group
- To pass the Group, the student must secure 40% in each remaining paper AND 50% total (including exempted papers reckoned at 50 marks each)
If a student exhausts all 3 chances without passing, they may opt to continue the exemption but must then secure 50% in each remaining paper to pass.
Yes, negative marking may be applicable for papers or questions with objective type (MCQ) format in CA Intermediate examination. The criteria for negative marking in objective type papers is adopted as specified from time to time by ICAI.
