What Is the Cornell Method?
The Cornell Note-Taking System was developed by Professor Walter Pauk at Cornell University in the 1950s and published in his book How to Study in College. It remains one of the most widely used and research-supported academic note-taking systems in the world — and with a specific adaptation, it works exceptionally well for professional qualifying exam preparation.
The system divides your note page into three sections:

The reason Cornell outperforms other methods comes down to three built-in mechanisms:
- Encoding during writing: Taking notes in your own words requires processing, not copying — this forces deeper encoding
- Self-testing via cues: The cue column becomes a built-in quiz tool — cover the notes column, read the cue, try to recall the content. This is active recall built directly into note-taking
- Summary writing: Synthesising a page into 3–5 sentences activates higher-order thinking and consolidation, not just recording
Adapting Cornell for CS/CA/CMA Subjects
For Law Subjects (Companies Act, Labour Laws, IBC)
Notes column: Write the provision, the section number underlined, the key conditions, and any relevant case law or example.
Cue column (fill after): The section number, a 2–3 word descriptor ("AGM — when required?"), and the key penalty or threshold to remember.
Summary: "Section X of [Act] requires [who] to [what] within [when] subject to [conditions]. Penalty for non-compliance: [penalty]."
For Accounts and Costing Subjects
Notes column: The formula, an example problem worked through, the standard result interpretation.
Cue column: The formula name, a trigger question ("How do we calculate BEP in value?"), and the key variable to watch.
Summary: Summarise the technique, when it applies, and one key trap (e.g., "Fixed cost in BEP is always total fixed cost, not per-unit").
The 5R Review Process
Professor Pauk paired the Cornell format with a 5R review process that converts notes into long-term memory:
- Record: Take notes during your study session in the notes column
- Reduce: Within 24 hours, fill in the cue column — reduce each cluster of notes to a keyword or question
- Recite: Cover the notes column; use the cues to recite the content aloud or in writing. This is the active recall step
- Reflect: Write the summary section — synthesise the page into its core insight
- Review: Weekly, use only the cue column to test yourself. If you cannot recall the notes for a cue, that section needs re-study

Common Mistakes in Cornell Note-Taking
- Filling the cue column during the study session — this should be done afterward, requiring you to re-process the notes
- Skipping the summary section — this is the most important cognitive step; students who skip it lose the synthesis benefit
- Copying the textbook instead of paraphrasing — verbatim copying is the lowest-value form of note-taking and eliminates the encoding benefit
- Never using the cue column for self-testing — notes without a review habit are just a better way to copy; the cue column's value is in the recite step
