CS Executive: Should You Attempt Group 1 Only or Both Groups Together?

Why This Decision Matters More Than People Think

The CS Executive examination has a grouped structure — Group 1 (3 subjects) and Group 2 (3 subjects) can be attempted separately or together. The decision of how to attempt this examination has a significant impact on your timeline to CS Professional, your financial investment, and your exam experience.

This is not a one-size-fits-all answer. The right decision depends on your available time, your background, and how you perform under examination pressure. What follows is a structured framework to help you make this decision with data, not guesswork.

CS Executive: Group Structure

Group 1Group 2
Jurisprudence, Interpretation & General Laws (JIGL)Economic, Commercial & IP Laws (ECIPL)
Company LawTax Laws
Setting Up of Business Entities & Closure (SBEC)Corporate & Management Accounting (CMA)

Pass Rate Comparison: One Group vs Both Groups

ICSI does not officially publish split data between single-group and both-group attempt pass rates, but observable patterns from recent sittings show:

CS Executive June 2024 data (approximate):

Attempt ModeTypical Pass RateKey Observation
Group 1 only38–45%Higher focus; fewer papers to manage
Group 2 only32–40%Tax Laws difficulty pulls down average
Both groups together22–30%Lower pass rate but faster timeline if successful

The Case FOR Attempting Both Groups Together

  • Faster progression: Clear both groups in one sitting = enter CS Professional 6 months earlier
  • Cost efficiency: One registration, one study leave block from work if applicable
  • Momentum advantage: Studying 6 subjects simultaneously builds interconnected knowledge — Company Law complements JIGL, ECIPL connects to SBEC
  • Best fit for full-time students: If you have 8–10 hours per day for 4–5 months, both groups is feasible

The Case FOR Attempting One Group First

  • Higher per-subject depth: 3 subjects instead of 6 means 2× the preparation time per subject
  • Lower failure risk: The cost of failing both groups (time + registration fees + emotional toll) is higher than failing one group
  • Better fit for working students: If you have 3–4 hours per day, attempting both groups together often means covering all 6 subjects superficially rather than 3 subjects thoroughly
  • Strategic sequencing: Many students prefer clearing Group 1 first as Company Law and JIGL are foundational to CS Professional subjects

Decision Framework

Your SituationRecommended Approach
Full-time student, 6+ months, 7+ hrs/dayBoth groups together
Working professional, 3–4 hrs/dayOne group per sitting
Strong in Commerce, weak in Math/AccountsGroup 1 first (less accounts exposure)
Strong in Accounts, average in LawBoth groups — strength in CMA Group 2 compensates
Second attempt after failureWhichever group you did NOT pass previously only

💡 Whichever you choose — plan it out before you begin. The e-mentor Planner lets you set your target exam date, select your subjects, and get a chapter-level daily schedule across your chosen group(s). Students who plan their CS Executive attempt with a structured schedule from day one have significantly better completion rates. Start your plan at e-mentor.xyz.

One Practical Tip

If you decide to attempt both groups together, set a checkpoint at the 8-week mark before the exam. If you have not completed the full syllabus for both groups at that point, drop to one group strategically — appearing for a group you have not prepared adequately is worse than skipping it and nailing the prepared group. This checkpoint approach reduces the risk of the both-groups strategy without eliminating the option.
