The Decision That Shapes Your CA Timeline
CA Intermediate has two groups of four papers each. You can register for both groups and attempt them together, or appear for one group at a time. This is not a minor tactical choice — it directly determines when you reach CA Final, how many attempts you need, and how much pressure you carry into each exam hall.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) does not mandate both groups together, but passing both groups clears you for CA Final. Most students agonise over this decision without a clear framework. Here is the data and the decision logic.

The both-groups overall pass rate (~6%) appears alarming until you understand its composition. Many students who attempt both groups have not fully prepared both — they attempt the second group speculatively. Among students who have genuinely prepared both groups fully, the effective pass rate is significantly higher. The statistic reflects the full pool, not the prepared subset.
The Case For One Group First
- Concentrated preparation: 4 papers instead of 8 means roughly double the preparation depth per paper. For difficult papers like Taxation (IT+GST combined) or Auditing, depth matters enormously
- Lower failure cost: Failing one group and retaking it is far less demoralising than failing all 8 papers and restarting
- Articleship timing: Many students are in articleship while preparing — 3–5 hours per day is the realistic preparation window. 8 papers on 3 hrs/day across 6 months is extremely difficult
- Sequential knowledge building: Group 1 taxation knowledge directly supports Group 2 Advanced Accounting application problems
The Case For Both Groups Together
- Time to CA Final: Clearing both in one go means entering CA Final 6 months earlier — a significant career timeline advantage
- Overlapping content: Group 1 Accounting and Group 2 Advanced Accounting share conceptual foundations — studying them together reduces total effort
- Full-time student advantage: Without articleship obligations, 7–8 hours per day across 5–6 months makes both groups feasible
- Momentum: Students who clear both groups in one sitting report significantly higher motivation entering CA Final

The 8-Week Checkpoint Rule
If you commit to both groups: set a hard checkpoint at 8 weeks before the exam date. At that point, count how many chapters you have completed and how many remain. If you have completed less than 65% of both groups' syllabi with 8 weeks remaining, drop to one group strategically — pick the group where you are more advanced and put all remaining time there. Attempting underprepared papers in a group structure where you need 40% in each paper is a high-risk gamble with limited upside.
