Auditing: The Paper That Rewards Writing Skill
CA Intermediate Paper 6 — Auditing and Ethics — is unique among CA Intermediate papers in that knowledge without presentation earns significantly fewer marks than knowledge with good presentation. Students who score 65+ in Auditing consistently report that they spent as much time practising answer writing as reading the content. Students who score 45–55 typically read extensively but rarely write practice answers.
The paper covers Standards on Auditing (SAs), company audit, internal audit, and ethics. Each of these areas has a specific answer-writing approach that the ICAI examiner rewards.

Standards on Auditing: The Must-Know List
There are 47 SAs. For CA Intermediate, you do not need equal depth in all — focus your energy on the high-frequency ones:
- SA 200: Overall objectives of the auditor — reasonable assurance, inherent limitations
- SA 230: Audit documentation — what must be documented, period of retention
- SA 265: Communicating deficiencies in internal control — significant deficiency vs material weakness
- SA 315: Risk assessment — risk of material misstatement, significant risk, inherent vs control risk
- SA 500: Audit evidence — FAROUT test (Sufficiency and Appropriateness)
- SA 520: Analytical procedures — types (trend, ratio, reasonableness), use in planning and review
- SA 560: Subsequent events — events after balance sheet date, auditor obligations
- SA 570: Going concern — responsibilities, reporting when in doubt
- SA 700: Forming an opinion — standard audit report structure
- SA 705: Modified opinions — qualified, adverse, disclaimer — when each applies
CARO 2020: Why It Is Always Tested
The Companies (Auditor's Report) Order, 2020 is issued under Section 143(11) of the Companies Act 2013. CARO 2020 applies to all companies except OPCs, small companies, private companies with paid-up capital and reserves below ₹1 crore, and certain other categories. It requires the auditor to report on 21 specific matters — including inventory, loans, investments, fraud, and going concern. Know the exclusions (who is not covered) and the key reporting matters.
💡 Audit is about writing answers that match the ICAI examiner's expectation. Use the e-mentor test series for CA Intermediate Audit to practice full-length answers under timed conditions, then compare with suggested answers. The gap between what you wrote and what the model answer covers is your preparation gap — and identifying it before the exam is the single most valuable thing you can do. Access at e-mentor.xyz.
The Audit Report Writing Shortcut
Modified opinion questions ("State when a qualified opinion vs a disclaimer of opinion is appropriate") appear in nearly every sitting. The shortcut: (1) Qualified — material but not pervasive misstatement/limitation, (2) Adverse — material AND pervasive misstatement, (3) Disclaimer — material AND pervasive limitation of scope (the auditor cannot form an opinion). These three conditions, stated clearly with examples, earn full marks on modified opinion questions every time.
