Starting CA? Foundation is Your Launch Pad
CA Foundation is the entry point to the Chartered Accountancy qualification in India. It consists of 4 papers written in a single examination sitting, and passing all four clears you for CA Intermediate. Understanding each paper, its nature, and its preparation demands before you begin studying saves months of misdirected effort.
The Four Papers
| Paper | Marks | Type | Pass Mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Principles & Practice of Accounting | 100 | Subjective | 40 per paper + 200 aggregate |
| Paper 2: Business Laws & Business Correspondence | 100 | Subjective | 40 per paper + 200 aggregate |
| Paper 3: Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning & Statistics | 100 | Objective (MCQ) | 40 per paper + 200 aggregate |
| Paper 4: Business Economics | 100 | Objective (MCQ) | 40 per paper + 200 aggregate |
Papers 1 and 2 are conventional written papers. Papers 3 and 4 are fully objective (MCQ-based), which means no partial marks — each answer is either right or wrong. This fundamentally changes the preparation strategy for the second half of the exam.
Paper 1: Accounting
This is the highest-scoring paper for well-prepared students. It covers basic principles of accounting, journal entries, ledger posting, trial balance, and final accounts for sole proprietors and companies. Key topics: Partnership accounts (admission, retirement, dissolution), Company accounts (issue of shares, debentures, final accounts), Depreciation, Bank Reconciliation Statement, and Inventory valuation.
Preparation approach: Practice is everything. Reading accounting theory without solving problems daily is the most common mistake Foundation students make. Minimum 3–4 problems per topic cluster per day.
Paper 2: Business Laws & Correspondence
Part A (Business Laws): Indian Contract Act 1872, Sale of Goods Act 1930, Indian Partnership Act 1932, LLP Act 2008, Companies Act 2013 (basics), Negotiable Instruments Act 1881. Learn section numbers and their essentials — questions require direct citation.
Part B (Business Correspondence): Letter writing, email drafting, notices, reports. This section is underestimated but carries significant marks. Good grammar and a formal structure score well.
Paper 3: Business Mathematics & Statistics
Covers Ratio, Proportion, Indices; Logarithms; Simple and Compound Interest; Permutations and Combinations; Sets and Functions; Limits; Differential Calculus; and Statistics (Mean, Median, Mode, Correlation, Index Numbers). Since it is MCQ-based, accuracy matters more than speed initially. Practice each topic to the point where 90%+ MCQs in that area are solvable without hesitation.
Paper 4: Business Economics
Covers both Microeconomics (demand, supply, elasticity, production, cost, market structures) and Macroeconomics (national income, money and banking, business cycles). Also covers Indian economic development — NITI Aayog, economic planning, sectoral overview. The MCQ format rewards broad coverage over deep specialisation.

How to Prepare from Day 1
Weeks 1–4: Accounting and Business Laws together. Both require daily consistency. Weeks 5–8: Maths and Economics alongside continued Accounting practice. Weeks 9–12: Full paper revisions, timed mock tests for all 4 papers. Never leave any paper untouched for more than 4 days — Foundation is won by consistent coverage, not last-minute cramming in one subject.
